Week 0 - Week 1 BMTC @ Tekong
"Hakim, where did you get all that strength from?" asked a section-mate of mine.
I must admit that the last 24 hours before enlistment was hard. I began to miss people before i left for the island. There was just soo much to leave behind and i had to lead a new life. The first few days were draggy. A lot of administrative matters to settle. Most of the military lifestyle was quite familiar to me since i had some good years of experience from NCC. However, it was missing the people that made each day kinda painful. I had to be strong somehow.
I wanted myself to be ready to face the challenges and endure my time there.
Survival. Most of my platoon mates just tell me that they only plan to survive BMTC and their 2 years of their NS lifes. But survival would just mean standing and endure strong winds in a sandstorm and if you are not strong enough, the winds would just blow you off your feet. Is that enough? When faced with such a challenge like NS, i would prefer to excel in it than just to survive. I plan to not only endure the strong winds in the sandstorm but still be able to walk on forward. It doesn't come easy. Not one single bit easy. Like what my secondary school teacher taught me, "to reach the goals of your desire, you would need to take those painful steps to achieving them". I stress the word "Painful".
So where do i get my strength to outlast the hurdles i face on that island?
My strength is Faith. The faith that my parents, family and close friends have invested in me. The spiritual Faith i hold strongly with each breath and heartbeat. I left for the Army to make a statement to the hundreds of friends around me that i have the willpower to overcome anything that comes in my way and im made up of more than they think i am. Each time the mind separates from the body id either chant with my remaining breath or visualize each and every single people who meant a lot to me. Words cannot describe how much i love all of you. Each time i train near the seashore, i saw home and vowed that each time when im back ill strive not only to be fitter but a better person.
Ill be going back in tomorrow on the 26th of December 2008. Just about 12 days more till i reach 20. Time is almost up.
Faith. Hold it tightly in your arms. Share your every breath and heartbeat with it. Before you know it, every single element around you becomes your allie in the wars you face.
Signing off for this week's post.
Kim.
